Wrapping

Stretch film and pre-stretch

How stretch wrapping works, what pre-stretch means and how to choose the pallet wrapping machine that uses the least film.

Guide

What stretch film is and what pre-stretch means

Stretch film secures the load on the pallet through the tension with which it is wound around it. With a wrapping machine, tension and overlap are constant and film use is lower than with manual wrapping.

Pre-stretch is the stretching of the film in the machine, before it reaches the pallet. The higher the pre-stretch, the more pallets one roll covers. On some machines in the catalogue pre-stretch reaches up to 300%, saving film.

When choosing film, thickness (microns), roll width, pre-stretch level and load type all matter. Machine and film are chosen together.

Equipment

Types of wrapping machines

Rotating turntable

The pallet turns while a carriage feeds film upward; the usual semi-automatic solution.

Rotary arm

The pallet stays still and the arm winds the film; suited to unstable or heavy loads.

Mobile robot

Moves around the pallet, no turntable and no ramp; flexible in the warehouse.

Pre-stretch

Stretches the film in the machine before application, for lower consumption.

FAQ

Questions about stretch film and pre-stretch

What is pre-stretch?

It is the stretching of the film by the machine before it is applied to the pallet. With a high pre-stretch the same amount of film covers more pallets.

Which stretch film thickness should I choose?

Rolls of 17 and 23 microns are common on the market; the choice depends on load weight, the machine and the pre-stretch level. We help you choose from your pallets.

How much do I save with pre-stretch?

It depends on the machine and film; some catalogue models reach pre-stretch of up to 300%. Real savings are calculated on your consumption.

Which wrapping machine should I choose?

By pallets per hour and load type: turntable for low to medium volume, rotary arm or robot for flexibility, automatic for high pace.
